Riddles Me This

LOL!!!!!!!!

Yesterday as we came down to staff meeting, Mike Riddles sat across from me at the conference table. Something just seemed a bit different...I couldn't quite tell, but I knew he was a different man. Then, I discovered that his face had a received quite a tan...a tan in a can! HA!!!!!

Turns out, our Mr. Riddles had used some self-tanning lotion, and it worked. Worked quite well :) It's a good thing that Mike is great guy, and can take a little ribbing. Because he really became the root of a lot of laughter yesterday during the meeting. Most of us on staff can say that we haven't laughed so hard in a long while. And even hours later, it was still funny.

So, I hope that you get a chance to see him tonight at Faith and Family Night (Cardinal Park, Johnson City) as he throws the first pitch. Admission is only a $1...and for that you get a great concert (Hyper Static Union--6PM,) a baseball game (Cardinals vs. The Elizabethton Twins)...and now Mike's very tanned face!!!!! You can't beat that deal!!!

And honestly, you won't be able to keep your eyes off him...he really resembles George Hamilton (see picture above.) You should ask Mike tonight if he's got an Ritz Crisps?

Mike, you only pick on the ones you love...we must love you lots!

Pay It Forward

Funny how prayer works, even when you're kind of jokingly saying it.

Let me explain...

A friend of mine gave me a call today asking if my wife and I were available to go and hang out tonight...Well, I had to explain that we needed a rain check, because we are going to be cleaning the house like mad for family coming into town this weekend. Then, we were joking about how someone should just come in and take care of it all for us so that we could go with them tonight. I proceeded to ask that she would pray about someone coming in to do just that. Well, it seems that God has heard the cry...and once again delivered.

At that very moment, little did we know, my wife and I were being insanely blessed by some amazing servants!

The servants shall remain nameless for now...unless they would like to come forward and identify themselves :) Their random act of kindness was taking care of our lawn!!! Now, know full well, these incredible friends have done so much for us before, and they just continue to give and give...Bless you and Bless God!

In retrospect, know that God always knows your heart...and always attends to the need. I feel that was truly lived out today. God knew we needed that today. Now, it's my turn to do the same for someone else.

And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

John 14:13-14 (NIV)

It Ain't Flashy...

But it certainly costs less.

You want and deserve the best for your family. Now, you can save money— without cutting quality.

Smart Money magazine says there are five products you should always purchase generic:

1. Produce: You can save up to 42% on strawberries alone

2. Coupon-scarce goods like butter, dry beans, spices and seasonings. You could save up to 77%!

3. Over-the-counter medications: The store brand is required to be just as effective as its brand-name counterpart. And the price difference can be astounding!!! $2 compared with 7!! I love it!

4. Canned fruits and vegetables

5. Pantry staples: Things like flour, salt and sugar are held to government regulations for production, packaging and storage. In other words, sugar is sugar, regardless of its label.

For Your Kids (especially if they've visited the Skate Park at Science Hill:)

Skateboarders and BMX bikers who've ever wanted to say a prayer before trying a new stunt, this could be the perfect arrangement: A half-pipe at a church parking lot Williamsport, MD.

After the town banned skateboarding in public places, New Hope Alliance Church pastor Todd Stroud saw an opportunity for what he calls Skatechurch. Stroud plans to combine weekly skating sessions on Sunday nights with a 15- minute dialogue about faith.

Over Easy

When you go to the store, check your eggs...not just for cracked ones, but for The CBS logo and slogans promoting the network and all of its series. The logo and slogans will appear along with coded expiration dates on egg shells!!!

More than 35 million eggs will be marked with phrases such as "CSI: Crack the Case on CBS!"

LOL!

The campaign will begin in September, when the fall TV season begins.

That just "cracks me up!" (I couldn't resist)

Pet-ouch-Smarts

Last night, we realized...oh no! Out of dog food! And being parents that know one of our dogs has a very weak stomach to chicken and to artificial dyes in food, we had to put a run to Petsmart on the list. It was my turn.

So, at lunch, I zipped over to State of Franklin Road, and was very happy to find that they were still doing the $5 gift certificate when you go and buy the Nutro food that I had to purchase.

Well, I got to the aisle...and there were 3 bags in front of me. But one of them...and only one of them had this big bright yellow at the bottom that said, "10% More- FREE!"

Perfect, with one exception...this was the bag at the bottom of the shelf with the others on top. I thought...and I thought...and I actually considered not grabbing that bag, because--for some silly reason-- I felt embarrassed for wanting to move the other two bags off the top. Not because I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to move them--despite the fact that they were each 40 pounds. No! It was the motive for wanting to move the other bags. I felt greedy for wanting the extra 4 pounds of food. I know that's silly, but in that one moment...I felt ridiculous for really wanting it!! Then, I felt ridiculous for standing there. So, I guess I got over my fear...because I moved the bags--both of the others, because they were so heavy I couldn't move one and slide the other out--and then hoisted it on my shoulder...carried it through the store...put it on the counter...and out to the car....after paying of course :) So, if you were hoping to find that bag with the extra 10%. Sorry, I took it. Greedy, Greedy, Greedy :)

Blushing with embarrassment,
CH

PS- Thanks to those extra 4 pounds. I gotta go see my chiropractor. I'm coming over, Dr. Craig!

Elmo Love To Help

Our military families go through so much on a daily basis. To help those families with something they cannot avoid, Sesame Street has produced a brand new DVD to be distributed to them for free.

The DVD will feature Elmo and friends encourage these parents in the difficult issue of explaining deployment and their parent's absence on a child's level. I read that, typically, military families ask for coloring books, or pamphlets...anything to help make this discussion a lot easier. So, this DVD should work wonders, because they see and hear the same struggles from one of their favorite pals.

The premise for the story is that Elmo and his parents are preparing for Elmo's dad to be deployed. The characters discuss their feelings, exchange keepsakes and talk about the reasons Elmo can't go, too.
They even promise to think about one another often. The DVD looks at the mixed feelings that sometimes come unexpectedly when parents come home. Elmo describes feeling "excited in a funny way" on reunion day. He goes on to say his tummy is doing flip-flops.

Here's where you can find out more:

Thanks for keeping these families in your prayers.

You Can Help

Something I read today, and I think is a wonderful idea...

You can help the Mississippi libraries recover from Hurricane Katrina.

The Dewey Donation System is aiming to restore Mississippi's public libraries to their former greatness by taking cash and new book donations.

If you get a chance, browse their wish lists at www.deweydonationsystem.com

Maybe you'll give some families a chance to read Goodnight, Moon or I Love You, Blue Kangaroo as their bedtime story really soon.

Forever..

God is faithful...I'm sorry it's been so long since I've written. Last week was a bit busy as my supervisor was out of town, and so I had a few extra things on my plate. However, I thought I would catch you up in one fell swoop!

July 4th:

I hope you had a great holiday weekend, and enjoyed some time to relax...Meredith, my wife, and I ended up heading to Kingsport that day to see the movie,CARS, with some friends. It was wonderful!! My thanks also to the staff and crew at Marquee Cinemas...I appreciate you working on a holiday. After Cars, we zipped to McAlister's for a Sweet Tea and lunch stop. Then, we went over to our friends' home they just bought and tried helping put some furniture together...in order that they would be able to sleep in a bed instead of on the couch. After that, we decided to head to downtown for the fireworks display. We got down there just in time for it to RAIN!!! LOL! We were walking through the downtown streets just before the display started...lo and behold, it started pouring! So, as we were scrambling to find shelter, guess what we hear? Yup. They started shooting the fireworks anyway. Where we were, we couldn't really see them, and even though we didn't have an umbrella, we braved the rain and watched the whole display while getting soaked!!! I had to try and clean my glasses several times, but the display was worth standing out in the rain. I have never done that before, so it was a first...and I think I'd do it again...as long as I knew to bring a towel.

July 5th:

Today was my pastor's birthday...so we went to the church for a surprise party planned just for him. Everyone brought fun gag gifts and good food for the occasion. He turned 40. My gift to him was a revamp of Daniel Powter's "Bad Day"-I wrote it as "Birthday" If you know our pastor, it'll make sense...if not, I hope the lyrics make you laugh anyway...

Birthday
--Sung to the tune of "Bad Day" by Daniel Powter

This is the moment you dreaded the most
You look in the mirror and your 30s are lost
Tell me your black hairs fade to grey
And its not somethin' that you ate
And you're no longer 39!

Your driving the minivan more than most
You went to Duke, something you like us to know
You and the fam are super kind
God has blessed you BIG, BIG time
But you're no longer 39!!!

Cause it's your birthday, another year down
We'll sing you that song...and we'll gather around
We say you're not old, but that's a big lie
Just look at the candles..the cake is on fire!
It's your birthday, you feel a bit ill
You're coming back down, yeah, you're over the hill
Cos, it's your birthday...your 40th birthday!

Well, it's great day to celebrate
The point is, please, laugh at what I say
Cos you're no longer 39!!!.

Cause it's your birthday, another year down
We'll sing you that song...and we'll gather around
We say you're not old. Okay, so that's right
But look at those candles, that's a real bonfire!
It's your birthday, you feel a bit ill
You're coming back down, yeah, you're over the hill
It's your birthday...your 40th birthday!

Okay...so, it's goofy...but it was lot of fun writing it for David. Happy Birthday!

July 6th: That's HAWT

This ice cream comes with an unusual stipulation, customers must sign a waiver before tasting it because it's so hot. Cold Sweat, a flavor sold at Sunni Sky's, an ice cream shop on NC 55, is made with three kinds of pepper and two kinds of hot sauce.

Owner Scott Wilson started out experimenting with jalapenos in vanilla ice cream, and worked his way up to Cold Sweat. The waiver for the fiery mixture asks that pregnant women and people with health problems not to eat it. Also, if your kids want take a bite...Anyone younger than 18 needs the consent of a guardian. Scott says that he decided whether to make another batch.

July 7th:

Mike Riddles and Mike Perry were out at Subway on West State Street in Bristol...getting you registered for the Music Boat Cruise and handing out "ONE."

After work, some friends of ours had brought over some beautiful flowers for our yard. So, we planted and watered...I like em...they spruce up our yard. After washing up, Meredith and I took off to Logan's Roadhouse (We had a coupon! Woo!) Then, we went to Kmart and went crazy in the clearance section on some window dressings and few more things for our house...but at those prices, you can't beat it. We ended up staying awake until 3am putting some of our new things around the house...cleaning and rearranging furniture. The sad thing was...I had to get up in 4.5 hours so that...

July 8th-10th:

...I could see you at the Blood Drive!!! We had a great time at LifeWay. Thank you for your donation. You could save up to 3 lives! Lots of families were there as the kids cheered on Mom and/or Dad. That was neat!

After the Blood Drive, I got on the road and drove 6 hours to Tybee Island, GA to visit with family who were down there for the week. I saw the beach twice...once to get in...the other to walk along it. If you're ever there, zip to a restaurant called The Crab Shack, have fun looking at the Gator Lagoon they have there--about 20+ Gators in this pool area...you can even feed them treats...and ask for Nicole. She was a great waitress!!

After visiting, took the drive back to good ole JC! If you ever get the chance to come oAppalachianslachains at 7:30ish in the evening (during the summer,) take it in...last night was beautiful!

Grace and Peace to your family...it's good to be home.
