Are You Smarter Than A 7 Year Old?

It's Girl Scout Cookie time, soon it will be Spring Sharathon, Youth Wrapping paper buying time, and don't forget Jump Rope for Heart, candy for the choir/band trip, etc....Fundraising is all around us, and you have probably taken part in your fair share of drives. However, sometimes it just takes looking through the eyes of a child to really get somewhere.

See, if you are looking for an unusual way to raise money for your church or other organization, all you need is a knowledge of eBay and a 5 dollar bill...or at least that's the path of 7 year old Landon from North Carolina.

Landon put a $5 bill on eBay auction block-- so that proceeds from the sale will help his congregation build a new church! Currently, the members are worshipping in a YMCA, and they would like to branch out on their own. So, Landon is doing his part.

The little entrepreneur already thinks the auction is going to be a big success as he said, "If people out there are willing to pay tons of money for a grilled-cheese sandwich with an outline of Jesus on it, surely someone would like to buy my $5 bill to help us build a church."

So far, the bid is up to $150 and the auction runs through Friday.

Go, Landon, Go!

PS- Seems like a modern version of the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30)

Shop Til You Drop

Yesterday, Meredith and I went to do some maternity clothes shopping, and as we were coming out of the mall, these two ladies were walking to their car. I had just opened the door for Meredith and was walking around the car to get in when I overheard their conversation.

One of them said, "It's just the true spirit of shopping! I mean, if I find something that I really like and want, I don't really look at the price on it. I just pay whatever for it. But I guess, that''s not a healthy habit to have is it, Mom."

All I could do was crack a smile, stifle my laughter and hop in the car, because my shopping style is so different. I just hope it wasn't her moms credit card. If it was....um....two words come to mind,

"You're Grounded."

My Tube

It seems that my wife and I didn't watch much TV at all. Now, were finding ourselves catching all these shows. And we had a major dilemma on Sunday as there was the Grease competiton, the Amazing Race, the Apprentice, then the news or ( a staple for us) Without a Trace....that 's all of four hours oin front of the TV!!!

And what's even more...is now, we're going to have to decide what we're going to do as Dancing With the Stars returns March 19 -- Now, I wasn't so into it last time...although seeing Emmitt Smith win was cool. However, this time, it will feature

•Billy Ray Cyrus

•Former /Entertainment Tonight /co-host Leeza Gibbons

•Apolo Ono the two-time Olympic gold medalist in short-track skating.

•Ian Ziering, you might remember from Beverly Hills 90210 (Immediate Favorite of the teens and tweens of the 90s)!!

I really need an eliptical machine in my house,

Big Day!

This past weekend was absolutely packed for the Harper family. Meredith, my wife, and I welcomed in our Moms from out of town as we made it a full weekend...

We went to help the Kidney Foundation at Chocolate Fest...remind me next year to bring a huge Tupperware container. WOW! I don't think I've seen so much chocolate in my life. It was awesome, and the neat thing was that it went to a good cause. (Not Weight Watchers Friendly.)

We travelled to several restaurants....I'll give them quick plugs...Scratch Bakery (Unaka and Roan,) Alta Cucina (Roan St,) and Sahib Indian Restaurant (Browns Mill Road.) Kudos to everyone...you fed us very well. As a matter of fact, we went to Sahib twice over the weekend. Once for dinner, the other, for lunch buffet. LOL!! You could say we liked it.

We also went to two shows: Jonesborough Repertory Theatre's Smokey Joe's Cafe' and Johnson City Community Theatre's Nunsense Jamboree...Both of which, we really enjoyed! Yay to everyone in their performances! ( It's wonderful to call you friends.) Entertainment was at its best in these Not-quite-so-easy shows.

So, now that our bank accounts are completely drained :) The reason that our Moms came to the Tri-Cities this weekend, was not only for the weekend of wonderful fun, but what happened on President's Day. And I don't mean the sales events at the mall.

Meredith and I went to the doctor yesterday for our 20 week Ultrasound!!!! :) :) :) :) We are expecting our first child in July...actually the due date is fun and unforgettable... 7/7/07.

It was amazing to see our child on the screen...It's hard to describe the emotions that run through your veins as you watch your first child...thanks technology....and we are trying to be ole fashioned and not find out what the baby is. As a matter of fact, it was hilarious yesterday...the nurses were VERY respectful of our wishes, but really peaked our curiosity. The Ultrasound Technician said, "You sure you don't want to know?" with a big smile on her face. Then, as Meredith was waiting on some lab work, another nurse said to us, "I hear you don't want to know. There aren't many couples who want to make it a surprise. Sure, you don't to know?" It took a lot to keep ourselves from saying, "Okay...tell us." But we didn't crack. So, the secret is safe with the doctors and nurses. LOL!

For now, we covet your prayers that the baby (Baby Harper) continues to grow, be healthy, and that we will learn quickly the ways of parenthood....and that we get our house ready :)

Blessings,
CH

Eat Now, Pay Latte-r

If you're thinking about heading out to eat tonight or gonna swing through Starbucks sometime this weekend, wouldn't it be so nice not to have to worry about how much your meal or latte' was going to cost???

Turns out, there are restaurants trying to make that possible for you. Some cafes and delis now are trying an experiment. They are no longer posting prices on their menu. You pay what and when you like, or not at all.I

If you decide to pay, there is a little metal lock box (this may differ cafe' to cafe') set aside for your "voluntary compensation."

This idea may sound completely "silly." However, the "voluntary payment" idea came out of a discussion that people are essentially good and can be influenced by their environment. For instance, If people see good, they'll be good...and so far...it's working.

You can find out about one of the shops doing this at www.terrabite.org

Your Food Future

Deciding where and what to eat always causes a good discussion at the Harper household. It's not a heated debate or anything, but neither one of us are good at making a decision about restaurants and food.

We're the type that just likes food for food, and don't really have many prefernces or favorites. As a matter of fact, my wife can count the foods that she doesn't like on one hand. I'm about the same. So, you can see we're really picky ;)

If you find yourself in the same dilemma, I have found a tool for you to use tomorrow when your deciding where to go for lunch or dinner or to find out what your in the mood for. Use the Wheel of Food!!!

It's an online spinner that allows you to put in your zip code and then, it will put a list of diferent restaurants from the area on the wheel. Give the wheel a BIG spin, and VIOLA! you've got your answer. Of course, if you disagree with the wheel's decision, you can always spin again :)

Click Here to see what's in your food future... LOL!!
CH

PS - In the inputs, you can even place words like "Coffee" or "Pizza" and it will spin with those serving that specific thing.

Bragging Rights

You have them...and it's for your kids!

I have spent the past few days in Kingsport at Eastman's Toy F. Reid Employee Center helping out with a Career Fair. I can't tell you how much fun I have had telling Middle Schoolers about my job here at the station, and giving audio demonstrations. It really has been a blast.

I've mentioned this a couple of times on the air...but I have seen teens from Washington County, Sullivan County, Hawkins County, Kingsport City, Rogersville City, etc...and everyone has been SOOOO well behaved!! As a matter of fact, they have listened, participated, asked questions, laughed, and everyone has had a good time.

So, if they show up with an 88.3 sticker, you'll know that we got a chance to meet, and if you want to take my word for it...you might consider giving them some extra Xbox time or some kind of reward for their excellent behavior...but I'll leave that up to you. :)

All in all, I just want to give kudos to you for helping mould and shape them...they are great kids. Good Job!

Love Is In The Air

Happy Valentine's Day!!!

Hope you are enjoying your day of celebrating love! This morning, It was neat to hear you responses to finishing the sentence, "Love is..."

Just a quick Valentine's Day note for you:

If your husband misses the fact that it is Valentine's Day, here's at least some small consolation. Even the leader of the free world forgets!!!

First lady Laura Bush says her hubby is "not very good" about remembering February 14th. Typically, it's up to the White House florist to get a card, which he signs, and then is delivered with pretty flowers.

The First Lady also says last year, one of the White House gardeners made a heart topiary for the president to give her (nice.) But she knew all along that the idea was the gardeners, not her husbands.

Much Love,
CH

I <3 U!

You've most likely seen NECCOs Conversation Hearts out of the shelves. You might have even picked up a few packages to give to your sweetie.

Now, (just like M&Ms) you can get customized hearts!! And to make it even more fun, you can receive them two ways...

Unfortunately, you won't be able to get rush delivery for Valentine's Day on the real ones. However, you could order some, make the "prototype" virtually...place a print outt in a card...and say that "They are on the way!" I'll leave that up to you.

Have a great weekend!

That's Just Super

On Super Bowl Sunday, as soon as the game was over, you saw the Indianapolis Colts putting on their Championship caps and T-Shirts...Congrats to them!

Actaully, at that moment, I was near the TV, so I meant to hit the volume button, but pressed the channel button. The next channel up was QVC, and they even had the shirts immediately on sale! Crazy!

We switched it back, and Meredith, my wife asked the exact question that was on my mind. "What do they do with the Chicago ones?" Cause we were both sure they have them both printed, because they can't just print off a ton of shirts and caps right before the end of the game. The answer to this question has eluded me up until today as I read that the NFL produces 288 Super Bowl Champion T-shirts and caps for each team.

But Rather than discarding the ones for the losing team, the league now donates them to World Vision, for distribution in places like Niger, Uganda and Sierra Leone. Other professional sports do the same...like the NBA.

Elementary, my dear, Watson...

Taste Test

It's official!!!

Chalmer's Coffee has won its first taste test...beating out some Starbucks' and McDonald's coffee in a quick taste test of the three this morning on the Family Friendly Morning Show. After reading that McD's beat Starbucks...we thought we would see if the results matched up!

So, Mike Riddles and Mike Perry had some special guests from around the Tri-Cities area to come in and make the decision...Here's the panel!

Robin DiMona- Johnson City Parks and Recreation
Karen Hubbs- Johnson City Chamber of Commerce
Chuck Madgett- Carter Co. School Board
Chris Mathes- Carter Co. Sheriff

They tried all three in a "blind" test, and Chalmer's Coffee came out on top in a unanimous decision!

There will be later taste tests, and I will let you know the results as they come about, or opportunities where you can sample.

Thanks to our panel of judges...what a blast it was to do something like this! Sheriff Mathes said that we should put a drive-thru window on the side of the station...fantastic idea! Thanks for the vote of confidence, too! WOO!

A Humdinger of a Website

Sometimes you start singing songs in your head, and you just can't place them. And since you can't figure it out...it won't leave you alone!!!

If that's the case, you need to visit Midomi...It's a brand new site helps you find the song you are looking for by asking you to hum, sing or whistle the song into your computer microphone.

After you place your rendition into the system, it analyses the sounds and matches them with a music database. Then, it will suggests the possible songs. AMAZING!

And you can even take it a step further...you can create your own profile, sing your favourite songs, share them and maybe even get discovered--Who needs American Idol? LOL!

Your Report Card

During the school year, there are parent-teacher conference days that are scheduled.

Usually your kids are out of school, so that you can go and find out everything to help your kids get along better and better.

I tell you what -- lawmakers really want you there, because they are looking at legislation that could cost you $500 if you miss one of those meetings.

What will happen if this passes is that schools would send you a notice for a meeting with three proposed dates by certified mail. And the fine could apply if you didn't have a "reasonable excuse" for not being there (you know, just didn't show up ) or at least give notice that you would have to reschedule.

Again, if it passes, fines collected would go to for buying supplies for the schools.

Interesting,
CH
